WARDOGS Not Launching or Crashing: Error Fixes

Error 1147405308 — “Failed to Authenticate With Online Services”

This was the single most reported WARDOGS error during the August and September 2026 betas, and it is an account/authentication error, not a hardware one. Players hit it in two situations:

  1. Access had not propagated. Pre-orders granted Closed Beta access, and Steam Playtest invites went out in waves — people who had paid still saw “access denied” until their entitlement landed.
  2. Login services were saturated. BULKHEAD said explicitly that Closed Beta 02 existed to stress-test “server scaling and browsing, Twitch Drops, DLC entitlements, VOIP and our login queue”. When those queues were full, authentication failed rather than queued.

What to check, in order:

  • Is this affecting everyone right now? If the error is widespread, it is server-side — wait it out rather than reinstalling. See server status.
  • Restart Steam completely (not just the game) so your entitlements re-sync.
  • Confirm the game or playtest actually shows as owned/installed in your Steam library.
  • Verify integrity of game files through Steam’s properties menu.
  • Only then look at your own network.

Crash at Startup / Application Error 0xc0000142

A crash on the splash screen before the main menu is typically the anti-cheat service failing to initialise, because WARDOGS loads its anti-cheat before the game executable. Standard sequence:

  1. Reboot. A stale anti-cheat driver from a previous session is a common cause and a reboot clears it.
  2. Verify game files.
  3. Repair or reinstall the anti-cheat service from the game’s install folder if the launcher exposes it.
  4. Update your GPU drivers — several beta stutter and crash reports traced back to old drivers rather than the build.
  5. Run Steam as administrator once, to rule out a permissions problem writing to the install folder.

See the anti-cheat page for which anti-cheat WARDOGS actually uses — the answer changed between builds.

Mid-Match Crashes and Stutter

WARDOGS is a 100-player Unreal Engine 5 game running BULKHEAD’s own “WAR DYNAMICS FRAMEWORK” for high-density combat, and the beta builds were explicitly labelled as scale tests. If you are crashing mid-match:

  • Drop view distance and global illumination first — they are the heaviest settings and the most likely to push VRAM over the edge on 8 GB cards (settings guide).
  • Turn frame generation off if you had it on.
  • Watch RAM: 16 GB is the stated minimum for both tiers, and background applications matter at that number.

Kicked From the Match / Removed From the Server

Beta players reported being removed mid-match for three different reasons that look identical from the client:

  • Connection loss to the login/session service — reconnecting usually works.
  • Anti-cheat disconnect — the anti-cheat losing its own connection kicks you even when the game is fine.
  • Reports and moderation. This was actively discussed on the Steam forums during the betas; treat any “why was I removed” question as an appeal to the developers rather than something a settings change fixes.

When Nothing Works

BULKHEAD’s support runs through Team17 (help@team17support.com), and the community Discord’s announcement channel is where outages and hotfixes get posted first. Both are linked on the official links page.
